Intellectual Focus

Supercomputers enable researchers to push the boundaries of modern science and engineering and to find innovative approaches to complex problems. From improving advanced manufacturing with modeling and simulation to understanding earth systems and weather with greater precision, harnessing the data revolution and applying data to understand life processes, supercomputers are essential to human advancement. HPC systems of the future will likely be very different from those of today. These emerging architectures can have a tremendous impact on the development of software, methods and models that can take advantage of new features in the hardware to speed up and improve the accuracy of calculations. Early adoption of these emerging technologies is therefore important to conducting transformative research and remaining on the cutting edge of discovery. The goal of this ASSURE site is to engage PhD. students in research learning experiences that increase their capacity to: (i) conduct research on supercomputing systems, (including those with classical and emerging architectures); and (ii) participate in and initiate international collaborative projects. Secondarily, the program aims to build and develop new collaborations between researchers in the US and international supercomputing centers. Current international supercomputing centers approved to participate in the project include: the National Supercomputing Center (Wuxi, China), Riken (Japan), and the Julich Supercomputing Center (Germany).
